Un estudio de la Universidad de Texas, en Austin (EE UU), dirigido por el profesor de Psicología Cognitiva Russell Poldrack determinó que en esta etapa vital tiene lugar una gran actividad en el sistema mesolímbico, una región donde el neurotransmisor predominante es la dopamina. Este mensajero químico está muy implicado en el sistema de recompensa cerebral. Todas las experiencias provocadas por la comida o el sexo y artificiales (inducidas por las drogas) concurren con una liberación de dopamina. Cuanto más se activa el sistema dopaminérgico, mayor es la sensación de euforia que se experimenta.
Por otra parte, la dopamina, se libera más con el deseo que con la satisfacción que este produce. Las conductas de riesgo, como hacer puenting o experimentar con drogas, son estimuladas por esta sustancia. Según la cual los adolescentes liberan en determinados momentos una gran cantidad de dopamina. Esto les hace proclives a ciertas actividades arriesgadas de las que pueden arrepentirse cuando se reducen los niveles del neurotransmisor.

Así, los sesos siguen realizando tareas innecesarias incluso en el momento en que el sujeto debería estar centrado en un solo asunto. Mediante escáneres de resonancia magnética, los investigadores comprobaron que, cuando un joven intenta concentrarse en una tarea ignorando los estímulos que puedan distraerle, presenta una gran actividad en el córtex prefrontal, un área involucrada en la toma de decisiones cotidianas. Es decir, a la vez que intenta enfocar su mente en un trabajo, está pensando en sus problemas de pareja, discusiones con los amigos o sus estudios.
